Oso Biri nanga Prisiri
As you know, for decades we’ve only known 1 or 2 beers in Suriname, but that’s now a thing of the past. In December 2019, our “Oso Biri” was introduced, which is Surinamese for “artisanal brewed beer.” A new word coined by one of Suriname’s founding fathers and hero Surinamese linguist, the late Uncle Hein Eersel.
In 1994, Robert Chin Fo Sieeuw brewed his first beer in Germany, and in the United States, it truly became a hobby. As an international marketer, Robert traveled extensively with his family for his work and discovered that beer is truly “the most unifying drink” in the world. In Suriname, it’s even a cultural practice to bless something new by sprinkling it with beer. Celebrating reunions with family and friends with a beer. Even after a funeral, people go to a terrace to have a drink together. So, the thing about having a beer isn’t necessarily about the beer or getting drunk, but about that “togetherness” feeling, regardless of origin, religion, generation, or orientation. That “WanBon” and “One Love” feeling.
In December 2019, the gates of Wan Bon Beer Garden & Restaurant opened in the entertainment center of Paramaribo, and it was packed every day with young people, the elderly, and notably, many women. Fortunately, WanBonBiri has been able to navigate through the waves of COVID-19, and now they’ve reached a point where they can participate in several international festivals in the Netherlands and the USA. Many come to the Beer Garden in Suriname for the “freedom vibe” where you simply have the space to be yourself, and Surinamese diversity is reflected in the WanBon beers, as well as our ginger beer brewed with wild yeast.
WanBonBiri has the largest terrace in Paramaribo with as many as 30 different plants, an industrial and retro architectural style, a microbrewery with tastings, an open kitchen, and all sorts of games. The gluten-free beers are doing very well, as are the massala deer, wild (bitter) balls, and vegan burgers. At this Kwaku festival, WanBonBiri is serving the well-known fried butterfish with a choice of passion fruit, tomato, or coconut milk curry sauce, along with the beer that has somewhat shaken up Paramaribo, “Combe Wit.” Named after the Combe neighborhood where the Beer Garden is located.
